Gathering & Closing Activities
Part of our comprehensive curriculum, Gathering & Closing Activities activities serve several purposes. They help guide the students into a frame of mind to address the primary learning objectives for the class or group session. They encourage student participation in a shared activity. In many cases, they can "set up" the topic for the class lesson. The materials are effective in elementary, middle (including grade 6), and high school programs.
Most gathering activities will take about 10 minutes, but the leader may find it appropriate to extend the period to 15 minutes.
Most of the time, the gathering activity will use a technique to invite the students to share their perspectives or non-threatening personal information. Students can express their own thoughts and learn from their peers. The element of self-disclosure is a critical ingredient in the personal growth aspects of the prevention curriculum.
